APE Levante Emerald OPO Synchronously Pumped OPO

Synchronously pumped OPO with an external green ps laser as pump


The Levante Emerald is a widely tunable high power NIR light source of ps pulses on the basis of a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO), with an external green ps laser as pump.
The ps pulses of the Levante Emerald are tunable from 690 - 990nm (OPO Signal) and 1150 - 2300nm (OPO Idler), where both, Signal and Idler, are generated and available at the same time1). The pulses of the output beam are nearly bandwidth limited and of high beam quality.

Because of the synchronous pumping, the Signal and Idler pulses of the Levante Emerald are generated jitter-free with respect to each other as well as the pump pulse. Since they are coupled out of the OPO collinearly, the Signal and Idler pulse have an intrinsically perfect spatial and temporal overlap in the output beam of the system.

The Levante Emerald exhibits a robust mechanical design on a solid steel baseplate enabling stable long term operation as well as excellent beam pointing stability. Tuning of the wavelength is done via a combination of temperature tuning of the OPO crystal with fine tuning via two additional, motorised optical elements, all operated from the control electronics of the OPO. Using the motorised optical elements only, fast tuning over a range of few nanometers can be achieved. PC software for automated tuning via computer control is also supplied. The actual OPO Signal wavelength and bandwidth is measured by an internal spectrometer.

The photon energy difference between Signal and Idler is continuously tunable, which makes the Levante Emerald an ideal system for multi-color excitation experiments, such as e.g. SRS (Simulated Raman Scattering), or CARS (Coherent Antistokes Raman Scattering).

Using a pump laser which offers also (preferably undepleted) fundamental pulses of 1064 nm, or similar, even more combinations of jitter-free pulses with different wavelengths are available.

Despite the ps pulse width, the Levante Emerald has been successfully used for SHG imaging, and important wavelengths for MPE (Multiphoton Excitation Microscopy) are directly available, such as e.g. 950 nm for GFP (green fluorescence protein) or 1160 nm for RFP (red fluorescence protein).
